Maybe We Rewind?
Hello everyone! Not frozen to death yet!🥶😰 Despite still climbing over snow/ice drifts it’s unfortunately getting EVEN COLDER in NYC this weekend, so what better time for some movie viewing huh? I’m still not about the cold, that will never change, so here are some throwback movie faves that are fun yet still timely in 2026 America.
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Crazy In Alabama
DICK
Drop Dead Gorgeous
A cult classic for people with taste!
A biting, insanely witty mockumentary about teen beauty queens in a fictional Minnesota small town. Funnily enough the current president always had a very uncomfortably bizarre interest in beauty pageants, but THAT must just be a coincidence!🤷🏻♀️ Beauty is cut throat, and the layered rivalries stemming from the teen beauty queens to the moms & the coaches are so well done it’s not surprising to me at all that it’s slowly becoming part of movie conversations again with a clip of Kirsten Dunst upset but earnestly exclaiming “This ISN’T an American Teen Princess Pageant! This is…this is…this is Nazi Germany!!!” I’ve noticed making the rounds online again. (if you wanna get real deep in how extra funny this has grown to be, this line is stage whisper yelled to the incredible Mindy Sterling who also played Frau Farbissina in Austin Powers released just 2 years before) I’d highly recommend this movie to anyone who is a lover of mockumentaries, especially the recently released Charli XCX film the moment which I also thoroughly enjoyed! My fellow US folks can find Drop Dead Gorgeous streaming on Tubi!
Crazy In Alabama
A classic film to me, and what made me absolutely dazzled by Melanie Griffith in my youth. Though this movie is based on a novel, I’ve admittedly never read it despite not being able to come up with a ballpark number for how many times I’ve watched this movie over the course of my life. Sometimes a woman has no choice but to off her husband & bring his head to Hollywood with her, a tale as old as time. The movie is set in 1960s Alabama, and while Lucille’s (Melanie Griffith) off to Hollywood, she leaves her dear nephew Peejoe behind who’s grappling with racism & police brutality while figuring out adolescence. While this may sound like a heavy plot, and it is, the movie itself still finds it’s way to being funny & heartfelt. My fellow US folks can find Crazy In Alabama streaming on Tubi!
DICK
This may be a bit more of a niche rec, but DICK is a super fun watch! 2 teen girls decide to wander from their group on a school trip to the White House resulting in them the stumbling upon the President-Richard Nixon. As their hijinx & involvement with Dick grow, they accidentally wind up being a crucial part of the Watergate scandal! No spoilers, but Michelle Williams & Kirsten Dunst make an excellent duo and their fashions are fun too! Kind of a younger, politically charged Romy & Michele. My fellow US folks can find DICK streaming on Tubi!
That’s all I’ve got for this time! While I didn’t intend to bookend Kirsten Dunst movies, she’s had a fab career, it couldn’t be helped. I hope everyone stays warm while I head out to sling drinks to theatre people & attempt to cover all of my skin🥶 with thoughts of Green Day & Bad Bunny to keep me warm.💚😋 Until next time! 👋🏼

I highly recommend Crazy in Alabama, the book!
