my original spoon
Richard Bone...🪦
hello everyone & welcome to a peek into what’s in the paid tier!
I’d normally leave a post intro going, then insert the paid bar right below this here paragraph as a teaser just when it starts getting good in the hopes that someone will pay me money! But alas, this is the time where I let you all read something I’ve originally written as a monologue…
If you didn’t know, I nearly a year ago decided to return to the Matthew Corozine Studio for some coaching by Ryan Tofil who was not only my 1st real acting teacher at age 12, but also brought me in to the MCS family later down the line for a preteen summer program back in the days of their Times Square Arts Center space. Despite the highs & lows of life & the industry, I’ve always had a soft spot for MCS, but especially Ryan…and I’ve still yet a need to question it.🥰🫶🏼
Ryan & myself most recently this past May at a staged reading for part 2 of Angels in America: Perestroika by Tony Kushner where Matthew Corozine invited me to read as the principality Africanii🥰
Before I had to take my unfortunate hiatus from class due to lack of funds/draining my savings, I wrote a monologue based on a short Spoon River Anthology verse. I’d been encouraged to explore it, though the more I memorized it the more I despised it despite the encouragement of my quality of writing as well as the last half of delivery…
Without further explanation, this is the story that Richard Bone wishes you knew about Spoon River:
RICHARD BONE When I first settled into my shop adjacent to the cemetery of Spoon River, I wasn’t quite sure how I’d acclimate to the people of the town. I didn’t know how to separate the local folklore, gossip, and outright vicious lies. But the longer I remained in Spoon River, the more I began to discern and sit with just how many falsehoods I’d chiseled for life. “HE WAS SO KIND” Only to find out mid-chisel he was secretly feared most by his now relieved wife and 3 children. “HE WAS SO WONDERFUL” Only to discover that he’d secretly fathered 4 children in the next town over with mothers aplenty. “SHE WAS THE SWEETEST WOMAN” She ran a school for girls that looked so beautiful and angelic from the outside, but was soon to be found out as a house of horrors complete with a basement torture chamber below. “HE WAS A CONSISTENT CHRISTIAN” The worst of the bunch whose bloodline would be the cause of my ultimate demise. A consistent Christian? Perhaps while in view of the townspeople, but he would unfortunately breed and raise the man who would bring on hate, paranoia, and fear to the streets and people of Spoon River-our judge. A man meant to bring justice to all, but couldn’t be just for too long without bringing nightmares to his smallest foes in the shadows. While some feared what his heavy gaveled hand could bring, I always knew of the skittish little coward under all of his pomp & circumstance. I never did give him the satisfaction of some day putting me behind bars & throwing away the key, but he never failed to let me know he would when we’d cross paths over darts in the pub. While a small town may bring comfort & familiarity, more complicated problems arise when you’re the only one able to do a job for miles around. I celebrated with elevated merriment when I heard word of his death…only to be left with myself at home sitting with the realization I’d once again be asked to etch an outrageous falsehood made to last long after I too would eventually meet my own forever sleep. I never could have predicted that a coward so vile could raise a son with such fierce conviction & loyalty to his family that he would end my life with his father’s gavel to my head due to his own misunderstandings of who his father was. I don’t appear to you as a warning to flee, but so that you may feel the weight of your own gavel and tasks as you acquaint yourself with the families who’ve been left in tact. RICHARD BONE
Thanks again for reading! Despite the praise I did receive from Ryan, the more I tried to memorize it for myself as a monologue, the more I grew to hate it & decided I’m actually most likely a terrible writer who’s been lied to her entire life & this is probably the most obvious perspective to have on a very short verse lol🤪
Until next time!👋🏼
